Typography III

Jason Dilworth

Title Sequence

The movie I chose to use as the inspiration for my title sequence was Man on Wire. There were several others movies I had viewed from the list emailed to us, however Man on Wire I had the most creativity with. It was a very simple documentary with a big story to tell if you had the taste for it. Admittedly the story is not for everyone. The documentary style used to create the film wasn’t very original but it served it purpose as a documentary. As far as the filming aspect goes the movie was that of any other documentary. What really impacted the audience was the story. I chose to create my title sequence in the image of the film.

As far as my title sequence goes my methods were all thought about carefully as to how I could mimic the film. The fading in from frame to frame as well as text I chose to incorporate throughout the entire title sequence because it isn’t dramatic to the viewer and can be easily interpreted. My text choice is mimicry if rope or wire. Of course the linear forms I used were to represent the wire used to cross the twin towers. I chose to use clips from the movie rather than just focusing on text because the story was the most important aspect of the entire film and I didn’t want to exclude that.

Overall, based on the goals I set for myself in this project, I felt that I was very successful. My title sequence may not be the most exciting, but I feel it captures the essence of the film quite nicely. It’s simple and elegant and focuses on the story rather than fancy editing, which I feel doesn’t distract the viewer from what their watching so it’s a much more effective method of filming.

Video

[Flash 10 is required to watch video.]

Video

[Flash 10 is required to watch video.]

Photo

Carol Twombly

Carol Twombly is a rather famous typographer who is best known for the typefaces Mirarae, created in 1984, Charlemagne in 1989, Lithos in 1989, Adobe Trajan in 1989, Caslon in 1990, Myraid in 1992, Viva in 1993, Nueva in 1994, and Chaparral in 2000. These achievements alone show how talented she is as a typographer as well as calligrapher. I chose to focus my case study this week on Carol Twonbly not just because I personally enjoy the subtle patterns she uses in her typographic design, but the history of Typography as well as Typographers has been focused around males. I thought it would be interesting to research the brilliant contemporary female typographers of today.

I find it interesting that some of her more famous works of typographic exploration were derived from historical lettering. For example her design Charlemagne was based on classical Roman engravings, which is a very important step in her typographic method. The idea of looking into the past to find new solutions seems like an obvious step to take when any designer is creating their work, however very rarely do I ever see this in Typography. Any typeface or lettering design seems to be founded on contemporary means of creativity versus past works. Engravings are such beautiful forms that were a very important and considered the highest method of record keeping in their time, however since the invention of the print press that method has grown obsolete. Bringing these shapes and textures into a typeface to try and mimic that method of record keeping is a brilliant idea.

Carol Twonbly retired from Typography in 1999 after creating so many versatile and wonderful designs for Adobe in the 1990’s. Designers should be exceptionally grateful that Carol Twombly had such a creative streak in the field of Typography and founded some of the most unique and now most popular font at our disposal. Her achievements in typography will forever impact the design world.

She’s created masterpieces out of noodles, flowers and broken jewelry.

One of the most interesting concepts of some across in her work is that she tends to fill every inch of space she has to work with. Each piece feels overwhelming and looks as if it never ends. I came across one page in her book “Wonder’ that said “less is more” with so much space left open, and every other page before and after is filled to the brim.

I found this interesting because I feel she does strongly believe in this style of work, and although it doesn’t appear to be used in her own if you look closely you’ll see that’s all she does. When I think of the concept less is more I think of work that is simple and clear to the eye as most people view the less is more theory. Marian Bantjes uses this technique only on a much smaller scale.

Marian Bantjes is known for her intricate patterns. When you look at a pattern to see it for what it truly is you need to look very closely and find the souse that creates that pattern and when you narrow down the source you’ll see the original design is actually very plain. It’s only when you repeat the design do you get these beautiful and complex form, which is what Marian Bantjes does. This concept of less is more is found throughout Marian Bantjes’ work and I feel is the key element in her success.

Photo

Scientific vs Typographic method

Scientific Method:

1. Ask a question

2. Do background research

3. Construct a hypothesis

4. Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment

5. Analyze your data and draw a conclusion

6. Communicate your results

Typographic Method:

1. Define the problem

2. Test different theories that will help solve the problem

3. Create different possible solutions

4. Test which solution has a greater appeal through peer evaluation

5. Narrow down which solution has the greatest appeal

6. Present your final product

Photo
